Induced pluripotent stem cells are pluripotent stem cells derived artificially from non-pluripotent cells, typically from an adult somatic cell by inducing a forced expression of certain genes and transcription factors. They are commonly abbreviated as iPS cells or iPSCs. These cells can propagate indefinitely and generate all types of cells in the body such as neurons, heart cells, pancreatic cells, and liver cells. iPSCs represent a single source of cells that could be used to replace those lost due to damage or disease. Owing to these properties, stem cells are used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. There are several medical applications of iPS cells, including organ synthesis, organ regeneration, tissue repair, disease modeling, and drug development. From a medical perspective, iPSCs provide a new human cell model to study the cellular basis of human diseases and innovative therapies. This book highlights the recent advances in the medical applications of iPS cells. With state-of-the-art inputs from acclaimed experts of this field, it targets medical students and professionals.
